Suratman Markasan is a prolific writer and respected figure in modern Malay literary history. He is a Singapore writer through and though, as exemplified by many of his works, both verse and prose as well as essays. Three main themes can be identified in his literary repertoise: (I) social critiques, with morality and ethics as the main criteria for evaluating ideas, values and practices; (2) observation of the social, cultural and political changes that have impacted Malay society; and (3) the clamour for religious reforms and the return to religion in the midst of the vast changes taking place in modern society.
